Under 16 Basketball Tournament A Huge Success

SportTayside & Fife hosted a hugely successful Under 16 tournament at High School of Dundee’s Mayfield Sports Centre on Sunday 10th December 2006.

Over 120 of the regions up and coming basketball players took part in the blitz style tournament, which had two round robin divisions for the nine boys’ teams entered and one division of three for the girls’ teams.

All four National League Clubs (Arbroath Musketeers, Dundee Sharks, Dunfermline Reign and Perth Phoenix) fielded development squads in the Boys tournament, and were joined in the “A” division by guests Grampian Flyers. In the “B” division for local clubs, Menzieshill Madsons, Glenrothes Raptors, Dunfermline BC and Montrose Ravens all battled it out against each other following the withdrawal of Leven BC.

Arbroath Musketeers, Perth Phoenix and Menzieshill Madsons showed the strength and depth of their club development work by entering teams in the Girls tournament as well as the Boys. With 2007 being the official FIBA Europe “Year of Women’s Basketball, it is hoped that future events will include Girls teams from Forfar and Dundee Sharks basketball clubs too.

The tournament received rave reviews from coaches, players and many of the parents who turned up to support the event.

SportTayside and Fife Basketball Development Manager Chris Dodds commented “This tournament has been a huge success. To have 9 boys teams and 3 girls teams competing in this event shows the demand for basketball in the region. The standard of play has been really high and having spoken with all the coaches involved, we are hopeful that this will become a regular monthly event.”

basketballtayside Technical Secretary Douglas Bader, a former FIBA International Referee, added “It has been a wonderful effort by all of the coaches and over 120 players involved today. Mayfield Sports Centre is a great facility for basketball and it would be great to see these boys and girls playing regular competitive basketball at events like this between now and the end of the season. Well done to all the coaches, players, referees and volunteers that made this tournament such a success.”

A copy of the results from the tournament is attached, along with some facts and figures of the participants involved.
