Gymnastics in Tayside & Fife

On the 8th May 2006 Jackie Archibald was appointed as Gymnastics Development Manager for SportTayside & Fife. Over the past 7 years Jackie has been instrumental in the progressive development of Pre- school, Gymnastics and Trampolining programmes within Dundee.

Her first post within a sports development setting was with the Youth Sport Development Project. The main focus of this project was to implement physical literacy programmes within local community settings, educating parents on the benefits of physical interaction within the early years.

Jackie was responsible for the design and implementation of the pre – school fundamentals programme which entailed working closely with the early years’ team and education providers to ensure a quality delivery and sustainable structures. This post gave her an excellent insight into the social inclusion agenda and understanding of targeted partnership working within local communities and an overall sound knowledge of sport development structures.

In 2002 Jackie moved on into a new role as sports specific Gymnastics Development Officer for Dundee City Council’s Sports Development Section. Within this role she was responsible for the progressive development of both Gymnastics and Trampolining across the city. Fruitful partnerships and focused planning led to the delivery of an all encompassing programme operating across the city.

Furthermore, the creation of The Gymnastics Strategy, which was launched and endorsed by the National Governing Body in May 2006, has left a legacy of pro- active actions to ensure the continued development and forward momentum of gymnastics and Trampolining in Dundee.

Role of Gymnastics Development Manager

Within her new role as Gymnastics Development Manager for Tayside and Fife Jackie will have a key focus within the following areas:

• Implementation of a sport - specific Long Term Player Development Pathway
• Establishment of a Regional Player Improvement Programme.
• Development of a facilities strategy for the sports partnership activities.
• Establish a network of effective clubs
• Recruitment, education and support to a network of coaches
• Recruitment, education and support to volunteers.

By targeting these areas, it is hoped to strengthen the infrastructure of Gymnastics within the region and bring about sustainable increases in participation and performance levels of athletes at a regional and local level.
