Developing Athletics in Tayside

Athletics in Tayside is thriving! The clubs are getting stronger and there has been an increase in the number of opportunities to take part. Greater partnership working between the voluntary, public and private sectors has contributed to the achievements of key targets, as outlined in the Tayside Athletics Development Plan.


Angus Schools...
95 primary school children with a disability, took part in a pilot Fun in Athletics Festival in Arbroath.

In Dundee...
Dundee Hawkhill Harriers were awarded a substantial grant of £2600 through the UKA clubs: future initiative. Approximately half of the grant was used to purchase new strength and conditioning equipment for the club, with the remainder being allocated to coach/official education.

Perth and Kinross...
Over 200 Perth & Kinross primary school pupils took part in a Norwich Union Fun in Athletics Festival at Bells Sports Centre.

Tayside

For the first time in four years, Tayside entered a team into the Scottish Schools Inter-area match, resulting in the girls winning and the boys finishing third.

Developing Basketball
in Tayside is the name
of the three year plan produced by
SportTayside.


Developing Basketball in Tayside

2004 has proved to be another exciting year for the development of Basketball in Tayside.

basketball Tayside supported and helped deliver many events ranging from primary school tournaments in Perth and Kinross, Mini-basketball and secondary schools festivals in Dundee right up to the hosting of the International Four Countries Tournament for junior women in Arbroath and Angus.

2004 has proved to be another exciting year for the development of Basketball in Tayside.
The Clydesdale Bank provided generous support to youth basketball programmes through their sponsorship. The Clydesdale Bank youthbasketball programme has made a positive impression across Tayside in many ways, including:

Establishing a Role Modelling Programme, visiting Tayside Primary and Secondary schools.

Assisting with the recruitment of qualified coaches and officials to support participation at performance events.

Promotional campaigns to raise awareness of events and festivals for youth basketball.

Developing Cricket in Tayside

Players...
U13 and U15's were again this year's focused age groups. Schools and Clubs were encouraged to send players to local trial sessions where local area squads were selected. From these squads, players were selected for the Tayside squad. A total of six players from the different age groups were selected for Junior National Squads. One players was selected as Captain for the Scotland U13 team.

Programme...
A winter programme will be delivered locally between January and March followed by the Tayside squad coaching in preparation for the competition season.

Coaching...
Players received first class coaching sessions locally from a selection of level one and two coaches. Following the selection of the Tayside squad, two full squad sessions will be delivered in March by level 3 coaches from outwith the area.

Competition...
A series of inter-county matches will take place in April 2005-06, followed by the inter-regional matches traditionally between Grampian and Forth Valley in June. Players will then be selected for the North Area and National teams. Last season, the South of North team consisted 100% of IMPACT players and the North District Team consisted of 60% IMPACT players.

Developing Hockey in Tayside

Developing Hockey in Tayside...
Theis is the name of the three-year development plan produced by SportTayside. This sets out the vision for hockey until 2006.

Angus Primary Schools...
A new hockey festival was held successfully at Forfar Academy for local primary schools. Over 50 children attended and it is hoped that this will become an annual event.

Dundee Holiday Programme...
A summer programme will run for one week in August
at DISC. Dundee Wanderers will continue their partnership working with Dundee Sports Development Section to run the camp for young players with mixed experience.

Perth and Kinross Potentials Squad...
This squad has been running succefully over the past year. Young players with potential in the area have been identified and invited along to regular sessions to improve their skills.

By facilitating progression through a strategic regional approach, support is offered locall and will allow the sport to grow to it's full potential.

In Schools...
Four Primary and two Secondary School festivals were held with a combined total of 372 children participating. With an increase in planned activities planned in the future, it clearly demonstrates the enthusiasm for the sport.

In Angus...
Development centres in Monifieth and Carnoustie have been busy this year with regular after school session for 'girls only' well attended. This will also be the case for the summer and easter programmes.

In Dundee...
Regular 'girls only' sessions have been a great success at Douglas Sports Centre, with numbers increasing all the time.

In Perth and Kinross...
